What Is a CNC Pipe Threading Lathe?

A CNC pipe threading lathe is a specialized CNC turning machine designed mainly for machining pipes and tubular workpieces, especially when large spindle-through capacity and thread cutting are required.

Compared with a general CNC lathe, its key characteristics are a large spindle bore, hollow spindle, pipe-oriented clamping structure, and CNC thread machining capability. This makes it particularly suitable for long oil pipes, casing, tubing, drill pipe, couplings, and other tubular components.

Xinheng's CNC pipe threading lathe series is also referred to as an oil country lathe, big-bore lathe, double-chuck lathe, or hollow-spindle lathe.

Applications

CNC pipe threading lathes are widely used in:

  • Oil and gas      drilling and production
  • OCTG      processing
  • Oil casing      and tubing manufacturing
  • Drill pipe      machining
  • Pipe coupling      production
  • Pipeline and      pipe fitting manufacturing
  • Large-bore      tubular component machining

One important advantage is the ability to handle long pipes without requiring the entire pipe length to fit between centers.

For example, when machining threads only at the end of a long pipe, the pipe can pass through the spindle bore and extend behind the headstock. A rear support can be installed to support the extended section.

This means that a 6 m, 8 m, 12 m, or even 16 m pipe does not necessarily require a lathe with the same bed length. Xinheng's double-chuck pipe threading lathes are specifically designed to support long-pipe machining in these length ranges.

Main Functions

Although thread cutting is its main application, a CNC pipe threading lathe is not limited to threading.

Depending on the tooling and configuration, it can perform:

External Threading
Used for machining threads on casing, tubing, drill pipe, and other pipe ends.

Internal Threading
Suitable for couplings and other internally threaded tubular components.

OD and ID Turning
The machine can turn external and internal cylindrical surfaces before or after thread machining.

Facing
Pipe ends can be faced to establish the required length and end surface.

Boring
Internal diameters can be enlarged or finished according to the workpiece drawing.

Grooving and Drilling
Additional pipe-end features can be completed on the same machine when the configuration permits.

Xinheng's CNC pipe threading series can process API 5B, metric, imperial, and tapered threads, while also providing conventional CNC turning functions.

Key Parameters

When selecting a CNC pipe threading lathe, several parameters should be considered together.

1. Pipe Threading Range

This indicates the pipe diameter range that the specific model is designed to thread.

For example, Xinheng's 550/600 mm guideway QK series covers different ranges according to model, from approximately Φ30–130 mm on the QK1213 to Φ80–320 mm on the QK1232.

2. Spindle Bore

Spindle bore is especially important because it determines whether the required pipe can physically pass through the spindle.

In the same series, listed spindle bores range from Φ135 mm to Φ325 mm, depending on model.

Do not confuse spindle bore with pipe threading range. They describe different machine capabilities.

3. Chuck Configuration

Long pipes require stable clamping. A pipe threading lathe may use front and rear chucks to support and clamp the workpiece around the headstock.

Pneumatic or hydraulic double chucks can also be selected for automated clamping.

4. Spindle Speed and Power

Large-diameter pipe threading generally requires suitable low-speed operation and sufficient spindle torque. Therefore, maximum spindle speed alone should not be used to select the machine.

5. Guideway Width

As pipe diameter, workpiece weight, and cutting load increase, machine rigidity becomes increasingly important.

Xinheng offers different QK series configurations with 550 mm, 600 mm, 755 mm, and larger guideway structures for different pipe capacities.

Configuration

A typical CNC pipe threading lathe can be configured according to the workpiece and production method.

Xinheng's 550/600 mm guideway series uses a 4-station vertical turret as a standard configuration, while 6-station vertical, 6-station horizontal, 8-station horizontal, and 12-station horizontal turrets are available as options. FANUC 0i-TF is listed as a CNC system option for this series.

For larger pipe-threading machines, available equipment can include:

  • Manual,      pneumatic, or hydraulic chuck
  • Electric or      hydraulic turret
  • Manual or      hydraulic tailstock
  • Steady rest      or hydraulic steady rest
  • Rear pipe      support
  • Chip conveyor
  • Automatic      lubrication
  • Automatic      pipe loading and unloading system

For production lines, automatic loading and unloading can reduce manual pipe handling and improve repeated production efficiency.

FAQ

What is the main difference between a CNC pipe threading lathe and a normal CNC lathe?

The main difference is the pipe-oriented structure. A CNC pipe threading lathe typically provides a larger spindle bore, hollow spindle, pipe clamping arrangement, and configurations specifically designed for long tubular workpieces and thread machining.

Can it machine both internal and external threads?

Yes. With suitable tooling, CNC programming, and machine configuration, pipe threading lathes can process both internal and external thread forms.

Can it cut API threads?

Yes. Xinheng's CNC pipe threading lathes are designed to process API 5B threads as well as metric, imperial, and tapered threads.

Does a 12-meter pipe require a 12-meter-long lathe bed?

Not necessarily. If only the pipe end requires machining and the pipe diameter can pass through the spindle, the long section can extend through the headstock and be supported behind the machine. The required machine length should be determined by the actual machining section and setup.

How should I choose the correct QK model?

Start with the pipe OD and required threading range, then check spindle bore, thread type, pipe length and weight, machining allowance, and production quantity. Chuck type, turret, rear support, CNC system, and automation requirements should then be determined according to the production process.

Before requesting a quotation, it is best to provide the workpiece drawing, pipe OD and ID, total length, weight, material, thread standard, thread dimensions, machining allowance, and production quantity.

Anyang Xinheng Machine Tool offers CNC pipe threading lathes for different pipe diameters and machining requirements, from moderate-diameter oil pipes to large OCTG components.
