What Is Spindle Bore on CNC Lathe?

Short Answer

The spindle bore on a CNC lathe is the through-hole running along the center of the spindle. It allows bar stock, pipe, or other long workpieces to extend through the spindle during machining. For example, if a CNC lathe has a Φ80 mm spindle bore, the physical opening inside the spindle is approximately 80 mm in diameter, although the actual maximum bar capacity may be smaller because of the chuck, drawtube, collet system, or other spindle components. Spindle bore is especially important when machining long bars and pipes because it determines whether the raw material can pass through the headstock. It should not be confused with swing over bed, maximum turning diameter, spindle nose, or chuck diameter.

Where Is the Spindle Bore?

The spindle bore is located along the rotational centerline of the headstock spindle.

A simple way to understand it is:

Workpiece → Chuck → Spindle Bore → Rear of Headstock

Instead of positioning the entire length of a long bar or pipe in front of the chuck, part of the material can extend through the spindle.

This is particularly useful for batch production from bar stock and for machining long tubular components.

Spindle Bore vs Bar Capacity

These two specifications are related, but they are not always the same.

Parameter

Meaning

Spindle Bore

Physical internal diameter of the spindle

Bar Capacity

Maximum bar diameter that can actually pass through the   complete spindle setup

For example, a spindle may have a relatively large internal bore, but a hydraulic drawtube can reduce the usable passage diameter.

Therefore, buyers processing bar stock should not assume that spindle bore = maximum bar capacity.

Always confirm the actual through-bar capacity with the machine manufacturer.

Spindle Bore vs Maximum Turning Diameter

Another common mistake is using maximum turning diameter to determine whether a bar or pipe can pass through the spindle.

They describe completely different capacities.

Maximum turning diameter tells you how large a workpiece can be machined in the working area.

Spindle bore tells you how large a workpiece can pass through the spindle.

For example, a CNC lathe may be capable of turning a Φ500 mm component but have a spindle bore of only Φ80 mm. A Φ100 mm long bar could therefore fit within the turning area but cannot pass through the spindle.

Why Does Spindle Bore Matter?

A suitable spindle bore can make workpiece loading and machining much more efficient.

It is particularly important for:

  1. Long bar machining – allows raw material to extend through the headstock.
  2. Pipe machining – provides passage for long hollow workpieces.
  3. Batch production – works with bar feeders and automatic feeding systems.
  4. Reducing workpiece overhang – more of the material can remain behind the chuck.
  5. Machine selection – prevents purchasing a CNC lathe with insufficient through-hole capacity.

Example: Selecting Spindle Bore for a 60 mm Bar

Suppose a factory needs to machine Φ60 mm steel bars.

Choosing a machine with exactly a Φ60 mm spindle bore would leave no practical clearance. The buyer should select a machine with a larger usable passage and confirm the actual bar capacity after the chuck and drawtube are installed.

For pipe machining, both the outside diameter and any dimensional variation of the raw material should also be considered.

Buyer Checklist

Before selecting a CNC lathe, check:

  • Raw material      outside diameter
  • Spindle bore      diameter
  • Actual bar      capacity
  • Chuck through-hole      diameter
  • Drawtube or      collet restriction
  • Spindle nose      and chuck size
  • Maximum      turning diameter
  • Workpiece      length
  • Bar feeder      requirements, if required

At Anyang Xinheng Machine Tool, CNC lathes are available with different spindle bore sizes for bars, shafts, pipes, and other turning applications.

Provide your workpiece diameter, length, material, and drawing, and we can help determine the appropriate spindle and CNC lathe configuration.
